2015-03-07 Ontraxs 2015

I attended this year's addition of Ontraxs, a very successful attempt of the Dutch Railway Museum to bring together the most beautiful diorama's in Europe and raise interest for the hobby among the youngsters
2015-03-07 10.51.52 The museum itself is housed in a former railway station near the centre of Utrecht  2015-03-07 13.29.26  2015-03-07 11.37.58 Yonder  2015-03-07 11.37.54 "Yonder" is Dutch themed diorama set in the fifties
2015-03-07 11.38.14  2015-03-07 11.38.09  2015-03-07 11.39.44  2015-03-07 11.41.14 This French modeler worked miracles with styrene.This WWI diorama is approximately in N (1:160) and absolutely convincing
2015-03-07 11.41.22 On the rear a double locomotive often mentioned in connection to articulated locomotives although a pair like this is strictly not articulated but simply two permanently coupled non-articulated engines.  2015-03-07 11.41.33  2015-03-07 11.45.23 Welcome to Gabard's world of total amazement. The builder opted to build a kind of dolls house in which all rooms were connected by rail. Each "room" was a small diorama of say 30 x 20 cm and an entire world in itself.  2015-03-07 11.43.11
2015-03-07 11.45.17  2015-03-07 11.45.11  2015-03-07 11.45.31  2015-03-07 11.45.35
2015-03-07 12.17.42 The trade was of equal quality and these Philotrain issues made me drool all over the place  2015-03-07 12.18.00  2015-03-07 12.20.07 Especially this in O gauge, an NS6300  2015-03-07 12.24.57 And an Animal Class, so called because every member of the class was named after an animal species starting with Donkey. Noblesse oblige, I must build one as the class also included a Vink (Finch)
2015-03-07 12.32.22  2015-03-07 12.32.14  2015-03-07 12.32.47  2015-03-07 12.33.04

2015-03-07 12.37.55  2015-03-07 12.38.04  2015-03-07 12.38.13  2015-03-07 12.37.26

2015-03-07 12.40.09  2015-03-07 12.40.26  2015-03-07 12.39.28  2015-03-07 12.41.52 "Zwaaghoek" is based on a Dutch tramway. Bystanders actually recognised the houses from days long gone.
2015-03-07 12.41.13  2015-03-07 12.41.22  2015-03-07 12.41.34  2015-03-07 12.41.39

2015-03-07 12.42.54  2015-03-07 12.43.37 Diorama do not need to be large to be beautiful. This simple truth was illustrated by this narrow gauge layout  2015-03-07 12.44.15  2015-03-07 12.44.22
2015-03-07 12.44.32  2015-03-07 12.45.14 This one was however very large  2015-03-07 12.45.24  2015-03-07 12.45.47
2015-03-07 12.45.59  2015-03-07 12.46.24  2015-03-07 12.46.30  2015-03-07 12.47.41

2015-03-07 12.48.53  2015-03-07 12.57.44 The most remarkable and probably the smallest completely operating diorama  2015-03-07 12.57.55  2015-03-07 12.58.03
2015-03-07 12.58.06  2015-03-07 12.58.16  2015-03-07 12.58.48  2015-03-07 13.13.10 To my taste one of the most beautiful layouts. Made by a French team on On3 based on a Romanian backwoods theme

2015-03-07 14.01.10 Wonderful IJsselstein, a 3D forced perspective diorama. the only moving object was a steam tramway locomotive and one car passing over the bridge, both also built in forced perspective.  2015-03-07 14.01.21 When seen from one side the forced perspective is mind boggling  2015-03-07 14.01.52 but from from straight ahead it is very very convincing  2015-03-07 14.01.31 There goes the tram over the bridge
2015-03-07 14.02.51 Crane factory, approximately 1:22.5  2015-03-07 14.03.04  2015-03-07 14.03.08  2015-03-07 14.03.16

2015-03-07 14.10.47  2015-03-07 14.20.33 A huge layout in more or less circular form, built up into three seprate dioramas. A Belgian entry, tramways roamed the Belgian countryside well into the fifties  2015-03-07 14.20.40  2015-03-07 14.20.54
