Inside - Tramway locos

DSC01076 Not related to the event but part of the permanent collection of the NSM are two steam tram locomotives. Typically a tramway locomotive is completely enclosed to keep noise and hazard down. One man operation was the norm so the engine usually could be operated from both sides. The left engine is a Backer & Rueb, its narrow profile allowing operation in streets and towns, the right one is a Henschel. DSC01057 A closer look at the Henschel DSC01058b DSC01059
DSC01060 DSC01061 The difference in size between the two is obvious, the Henschel weighing well over 16 tons and the Backer barely making it over 10 tons DSC01062 DSC01063
DSC01064 Cramped work, cleaning this loco. DSC01054 Silvolde, which still retains its original road number, served the Geldersche Tranweg Maatschappij GTW. Some original footage is on Youtube DSC01065 DSC01066 My wide angle lens makes chopped meat of the perspective, but at least it allows a reasonable view on the loco under these difficult conditions.
DSC01067 A good view on the primary controls: regulator, water gauge (?), pressure gauge and bell DSC01068 Water gauge, washing plug, water proofing cocks DSC01069 Fire door DSC01070 View on the internal motion, hidden well away from the general public's arms and legs.
DSC01071 DSC01072 Hand brake (left) and reverser (next to boiler) DSC01073 Smoke box door. DSC01075
