1 Indonesia was a Dutch colony until 1949. Before the indepence the Dutch invested in sugar and palm oil mills which continued to operate after Indonesian independence until fairly recently. This event was to stimulate the interest of this aspect of common Dutch-Indonesian rail history and to clear the way to the repatriation of at least two Dutch built steam locomotives currently residing in Indonesia.
